As I was going through fragments of songs that I started around 2014 I came across one that had a melody vocalized without words. It was short, just under 2 minutes, and I almost uploaded it to my Snippets page as was, but as I listened to it I decided to flesh it out into a full song. So I re-tracked the bass part and all the guitar parts, wrote and re-wrote lyrics and recorded them, and now it’s a full song, called A Friend of Mine. Based on a true experience with only a minimum of poetic license applied.

A Friend of Mine

We used to talk about almost everything      [V1]
We used to laugh until we were crying
We shared a bond solid enough
To last through space and time

We were together, working and playing
We even made some pretty good art
I trusted our friendship, thought it was golden
I didn’t protect my heart

You were a friend of mine, as great as any find   [CH]
Future bright for you and me
You had a change of mind, I got left behind
To wonder, how could you flee?

The closest of friends, for so many years       [V2]
We trusted each other, no matter what came
Up every mountain, around every bend
Til the day when you cast the blame

I’d made a hard choice, you thought I’d betrayed you
I tried to explain, you didn’t believe
A misunderstanding, simple but lethal
Now I’m left to grieve

Repeat Chorus       [CH]

Solo (Verse & Chorus)   [Solo]

I tried in vain, to break through your wall     [V3]
Maybe our friendship will never return
That part of my heart, enveloped in sadness
And I will always yearn

Cause we used to talk about almost everything
We used to laugh until we were crying
We shared a bond solid enough
To last through space and time

Chorus     [CH]

Solo        [Outro]
