In December of 2023 I decided to start a project I’d long thought about. I had tapes of Haywire from 1978 that had been recorded in our rehearsal studio. Online I found someone to digitize them and sent several tapes off in early 2024. When I downloaded the digitized files and started listening I found this song in one of the digitized collections, a live performance from a venue in Redwood City, CA, in 1978. I had completely forgotten about it. The recording wasn’t very good quality and because of that I haven’t yet tried to mix and master any of those songs. In that recording there were parts of chorus where I couldn’t understand the words no matter what isolation tricks I tried. There was another recording on a tape I hadn’t gotten digitized so I bit the bullet and paid to get that tape digitized but the same issue was in the same sections of that recording, so I had no choice but to rewrite some lyrics. I also rewrote some parts of the verses for this recording, as this song was a very early effort and my lyric writing at the time wasn’t very well developed, so I figured that it was fair game as long as I was having to rewrite parts of the chorus anyway.
This song simply recognizes the importance and wonder of having someone in your daily life who completes you, so to speak, while at the same time allows you to be your own person without trying to control you. Easier said than done, yet not at all uncommon. - Paul Fifield
