Over the course of a couple of decades I recorded, on digital recorders of various makes and finally on iPhone versions, snippets of song ideas that I would get whenever I'd pick up my guitar. Even sometimes while doing other things, like driving, an idea would hit me and I'd sing a melody and/or a beat into the device. I got prolific at having new ideas, new feels, etc., and horrible at doing anything with them. I tried to think of these snippets as entities that were patiently waiting for me to get back to them and that helped me to not feel bad about leaving them behind but I was always on to the next new idea and never had time for the old ones. Well, with the advent of AI music generators, I now can take these really raw sounding snippets and have the AI generate backing tracks that follow the chord progression and melody. This process inspires me to actually dig in and turn snippets into full songs. So here's one of them.
This song is pure fiction but has elements of personal experience in it. Well, what song doesn't? As usual, I spent a lot of time on the lyrics. – Paul Fifield
How Can I Get Over You
© Paul Fifield 2026
[Verse 1]
The wind blows its lonesome old sound
Bags packed and feet on the ground
This house, this heart are trying to keep me from goin'
[Verse 2]
And though I just got a big break
It shouldn’t have made our hearts ache
I wanted you with me but the seeds had already been sown
[Chorus]
They tell me I'll get over you
But right now I’m tearing in two
I am up, I am down, I am spinning around and I’m blue
I can’t just stand here and stare
If I’m gonna go anywhere
But how can I go if it means that I go without you
[Verse 3]
We could have kept me from leavin’
Could have avoided this grievin’
Some honest compassion and talkin’ was all it would take
[Verse 4]
We turned our backs on our hearts
We couldn’t face a new start
We couldn’t forgive so we opted to let our hearts break
[Chorus]
How can I get over you
When right now I’m tearing in two
I am up, I am down, I am spinning around and I’m blue
I can’t just stand here and stare
If I’m gonna go anywhere
But how can I go if it means that I go without you
[instrumental break]
[Bridge]
How can I get over you
when one thing I know is so true
A strong love may fade, but won’t die completely away
An ember still burned in our hearts
Just needing a bit of a spark
A kind word a day was all that we needed to say
[Verse 5]
If only we’d taken the chance
If only we’d danced one more dance
And given our hearts the freedom to love like before
[Verse 6]
One song while holding on tight
One song to get it all right
We might have recaptured the love you don't feel anymore
[Chorus]
How can I get over you
When right now I’m tearing in two
I am up, I am down, I am spinning around and I’m blue
I can’t just stand here and stare
If I’m gonna go anywhere
But how can I go if it means that I go without you
[Repeat Chorus]
How can I get over you
When right now I’m tearing in two
I am up, I am down, I am spinning around and I’m blue
I can’t just stand here and stare
If I’m gonna go anywhere
But how can I go if it means that I go without you
