After 9/11 I got to thinking about what it must be like to go through the shock of waking up to a normal day and at some point during the day finding out that your most intimate partner has been taken from you forever. No chance to say goodbye, no chance to apologize for the last harsh thing you may have said to them, no chance to continue on the path you were on when you woke up. I debated long and hard about including the line “why did you have to die?”, as I didn’t want to hit listeners over the head with that, but ultimately I decided that I didn’t want the song to be received as just another break-up song. I wanted it to have the impact of loss that I was trying to express in the rest of the lyrics. The words “high as a kite” were influenced by my memory of a Kingston Trio recording I loved in my youth called Scotch and Soda, in which appears the line, “do I feel higher than a kite can fly”. - Paul Fifield

Well, I’m…high as a kite, I don’t feel anything
I don’t feel anything…. but you
I drink all night, so I won’t feel anything
I know it’s not right; it’s all I can do

Oh, when you left me, you left me cold
You left me drowning in my tears
I want you back, babe, to have and to hold
I just can’t make it here, I need to have you near

So I …long for your touch, but I don’t feel anything
I can’t believe it’s really true
I don’t ask for much, but I don’t get anything
I’ve got the past, but I don’t have you.

I woke up that morning, you were already gone
The bed was still warm where you had been lying
Later that morning, I got the news
Why did you have to die, we never said goodbye

Now I’m …high as a kite, but I don’t feel anything
There’s a black hole inside of me
Into the night, flying on spirit wings
Gone is the world we used to be

Oh, when you left me, you left me cold
You left me drowning in my tears
I want you back, babe, to have and to hold
I just can’t make it here, I’m losing my grip, I fear

Now, I’m…high as a kite, I don’t feel anything... ooh
