One evening the line “in my particular state of mind” started bouncing around in my head and it felt like it belonged in a rockabilly song. Sometimes I spend years periodically working on a song but this one, as I recall, came pretty quickly. And I think the feel of that line may have been influenced by Chuck Berry’s “No Particular Place To Go”, which I heard often as a kid. But that sort of thing happens frequently. A piece of an existing song can get stuck in my head and form the basis of a whole new song. Which brings up the point that the term “original” is a relative term because we are all influenced by other people’s works that have become part of the fabric of our lives and those influences can be seen or heard in our own “original” works. - Paul Fifield

In my particular state of mind, I don’t feel much like going out with you
I know I’ll only wind up feelin’ blue, I hate to tell you but it’s true
In my particular state of mind, I don’t feel much like bein’ on the town
And even less like bein’ seen around, cavortin’ with the likes of you
I bet you think I’ll change my mind, don’t count on that one bein’ true
Cause ya know that I’ve been thinkin’ a lot, and every thought
Seems to lead away from you
I’m tired of being played a fool, you never knew the golden rule
And so I’m lettin’ you go, I’m lettin’ you know we’re through
In my particular state of mind, I’d rather stay at home and lie around
Watch TV and toss some whiskey down, and think of how to start anew
In my particular state of mind, I might just hang out in my underwear
Lollygag around without a care, I think I’m really overdue
I bet you think I’ll change my mind, don’t count on that one bein’ true
Cause ya know that I’ve been thinkin’ a lot, and every thought
Seems to lead away from you
I’m tired of being played a fool, you never knew the golden rule
And so I’m lettin’ you go, I’m lettin’ you know we’re through
In my particular state of mind, I wanna take some time and settle down
Be myself without you hangin ‘round, and take a look at how it goes
In my particular state of mind, I’m lookin’ forward to some R&R
Strum a tune or two on my guitar, live a life in sweet repose
I bet you think I’ll change my mind, don’t count on that one bein’ true
Cause ya know that I’ve been thinkin’ a lot, and every thought
Seems to lead away from you
I’m tired of being played a fool, you never knew the golden rule
And so I’m lettin’ you go, I’m lettin’ you know we’re through
