When I was 18 (1968) and still living at home my dad caught me with a lid of grass. He forced me to make a choice on the spot. “Either that stuff goes or you go”, he said. I didn’t respond, initially, I just stood there weighing my options. “Well?”, he said. Kind of like a Jack Benny bit, I said, “I’m thinking.” And instead of attempting to discuss the situation and working something out I chose to leave. I spent the next several months couch surfing, wearing out my welcome with various friends. Of course, I took my burdens with me, which are represented in this song by My Pack. And like all young adults I dragged my burdens around with me as I went through various relationships and all the standard life experiences through the years. As time went on I learned how to unburden myself of some of the internal junk I carried and focus on thoughts that would have some chance of lifting me out of negative and depressing states. Just part of life’s journeys. - Paul Fifield

Just Move On

Dad said either that stuff goes, or you'll find yourself out on your own
And don't be calling me to bail you out
Looking back I had a choice, but I had not yet found my voice
Just stood there looking lost, looking down

I reached down and I grabbed my pack, slung that sucker on my back
Slammed the door and leaned into the wind
Headed down the road alone, not being welcome back at home
Not knowing where I was going or where I'd been

I should try to lose this pack, let it go and don't look back, and just move on
I should lift my eyes on high, any way, any why, and just move on

Long, hard, winding road, Sierra high, Death Valley low
I hung on to my pack right through it all
There I stuffed the hidden me, down where no one else could see
Times it weighed so much I had to crawl [hold Am]

But I've got a feeling... I will fly... somehow
I see a light on the horizon, and I'll just keep my eyes on that for now

Now I see the way to fly: keep that light before my eyes
And lighten up my pack along the way
I dig down I'm still surprised, what I lay before my eyes
Stuff that's never seen the light of day

I should try to lose this pack, let it go, and don't look back, and just move on
I should lift my eyes on high, any way, any why, and just move on
I should lift my eyes on high... any way, any why... and just move on
