Recorded in Redwood City, CA, in 1978, by Robyn Coultas. Remixed and mastered in Windsor, CA, in 2024 by Paul Fifield. Haywire was:

Tom Barrett - Drums
Paul Fifield - Bass and Lead Vocals
Gary Manley - Guitar and Backing Vocals
Elmer Perry - Guitar and Backing Vocals
Terri Fifield Morris - Backing Vocals and Percussion

I co-wrote this song in 1978 with Gary Manley (1950-2022). At that time we were in the band Haywire and Music’s In My Soul became part of the band’s repertoire, as reflected in this Haywire recording. This was one of my earliest songwriting attempts. I had come up with the chorus, which was largely informed by my own experiences, and with the chords and melody for the verses, but had no ideas for the verse lyrics. Gary supplied the verse lyrics which were largely informed by his own experiences, and together we created what I think is an interesting and lively song. - Paul Fifield

I can still remember back to when I was just a little boy
I wasn’t like the other kids, I didn’t much play with toys
But I had me a radio and big stack of 45’s
Long as I had my music I was the happiest boy alive

My mama used to tell me why don’t you go out and have some fun
Why ain’t you like the other boys out playing in the sun
Then my daddy he’d smile at her and say why don’t you let him be?
Can’t you see that he loves his music, the boy takes after me

Lord knows, I just can’t quit, I’ve got music in my soul
I can dig a symphony, or that good ol’ rock and roll
Livin’ here and lovin’ you, doin’ what I wanna do
Makin’ love and music, gettin’ high and feelin’ free, bein’ where I want to be

Evenings used to find me out there sittin’ at my Pappy’s knee
Watchin’ him play his guitar and singin’ them songs for me
Late at night when Mama thought that I was just fast asleep
I had my ears wide open, Lord, you know I never missed a beat

I remember savin’ my money and puttin’ it in a jar
Goin’ down to the music store and buyin’ my first guitar
I was only seven years old, that guitar was ‘bout as big as me
I played that thing all night and day, it was the best thing ever happened to me

Now I am a grown man and I’m playin’ in a rock and roll band
Most of the time I’m on the road, playin’ wherever I can
Sometimes after show when I’m about to go to sleep
I can still hear my daddy sayin’ why don’t you let the poor boy be

Lord knows, I just can’t quit, I’ve got music in my soul
I can dig a symphony, or that good ol’ rock and roll
Livin’ here and lovin’ you, doin’ what I wanna do
Makin’ love and music, gettin’ high and feelin’ free, bein’ where I want to be
