Over the course of a couple of decades I recorded, on digital recorders of various makes and finally on iPhones, snippets of song ideas that would flow out of me whenever I'd pick up my guitar. Even sometimes while doing other things, like driving, an idea would hit me and I'd sing a melody and/or a beat into a device. I got prolific at having new ideas, new feels, etc., and horrible at doing anything with them. I tried to think of these snippets as entities that were patiently waiting for me to get back to them and that helped me to not feel bad about leaving them behind but I was always on to the next new idea and never had time for the old ones. Well, with the advent of AI music generators, I now can take these really raw sounding snippets, upload them, and have the AI generate backing tracks that follow the chord progression, melody and melodic rhythms. This process inspires me to actually dig in and turn these old snippets into full songs. So here's one of them – The Magic In Me.
For me, writing lyrics is always an exercise in attempting to squeeze the most meaning out of the fewest words. And sometimes I go round and round for days, weeks, even months, listening to the lyrics internally while thinking about whether or not I'm saying what I want to say. The big challenge for this song was the word “magic”. I didn't want listeners to associate magical thinking with my message because that's not what the song is about. But try as I might I couldn't come up with a substitute that was as good at conveying the sense of wonder and connection that I feel inside of me in those times when I'm aware that I'm made of the same stuff that the rest of the universe is, and the feeling that that connection gives me, to be part of something so vast and unfathomable that it feels, well, magical, for lack of a better word.. – Paul Fifield

[Verse 1]
Don’t know why I’m here, or where I’m from
But I can feel the magic in me
Not sorcery, but primal cosmic song
The notes and all the spaces in between
[Chorus]
The roads I’ve walked have always brought me home
Listening to the magic in me
Never alone, no matter where I roam
In concert with our cosmic symphony
[Verse 2]
Not just me, it’s in you too
All a part of life on Earth
Not only Earth, before and after too
Carries on beyond all death and birth
[Chorus]
The roads I’ve walked have always brought me home
Listening to the magic in me
Never alone, no matter where I roam
In concert with our cosmic symphony
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 3]
This primal harmony, that tells us we belong
Creates all time and space and matter too
Ever-changing song, we all sing along
Imbues us with the magic through and through
[Chorus]
The roads I’ve walked have always brought me home
Listening to the magic in me
Never alone, no matter where I roam
In concert with our cosmic symphony
[Outro]
The roads I’ve walked have always brought me home
Listening to the magic in me
Never alone, no matter where I roam
In concert with our cosmic symphony
