This is a song I started while in Haywire in 1978, and I was futzing around with it outside our rehearsal space (my garage) when my bandmate Gary Manley walked stopped and listened for a bit, and then suggested that I go to an Em->F after the chorus section. That one little suggestion made the song! That became the verse section and led easily into the repeating bridge section. The lyrical inspiration of this song sprung from one of those high school summer love affairs that many of us get to experience as we transition through adolescence. I experienced one that was particularly difficult to get over, and which formed the basis for these lyrics. - Paul Fifield

Thunder and the Rain

Woke up this morning to the sound of rain pourin’ down
Most times it makes me smile, I love the peaceful sound
But today it only makes me feel like there’s somethin’ wrong
Though I try to forget you babe, it never seems to last too long

Every time that I think I’m gettin over you, that’s when
I turn around and the same old feelin’s back again, back again, yeah

Thunder and the rain, lightnin’ strikes again
The same old hurt and pain, here it comes again

It’s been so long, my love, since I’ve been with you
Held your hand and touched your hair and laughed with you
I see your face everywhere I go, I always hear you call my name
I tell myself what’s done is done, but you’re hauntin’ me just the same

Every time that I think I’m gettin over you, that’s when
I turn around and that same old feelin’s back again, back again, yeah

Thunder and the rain, lightnin’ strikes again
The same old hurt and pain, here it comes again

Why can’t I laugh and joke the way I used to do?
Why should a rainy mornin’ make me blue?
It’s the thunder and the rain my love, bringing memories of you
It’s turned my whole world upside down, and now I don’t know what to do

Every time that I think I’m gettin over you, that’s when
I turn around and that same old feelin’s back again, back again, yeah

Thunder and the rain, lightnin’ strikes again
The same old hurt and pain, here it comes again

Thunder and the rain, lightnin’ strikes again
Thunder and the rain, here it comes again
